The recent form makes for tough reading. Six races, no wins, and the best finish in that run is a fifth — with a couple of unplaced efforts mixed in. At 13, most racehorses have long since been retired to a paddock somewhere, so the fact that Muroor raced just one day ago says something about its durability, if not its ability to get to the front. Trainer Lizzie Quinlan, whose yard at Bolton Mill in Cumbria has sent out four winners this season, clearly keeps the horse in reasonable condition to keep competing at this stage of its life.
Muroor races almost exclusively at Class 5 level — the lower end of the ladder, where horses that have not quite made it at higher levels tend to gather. Across 23 races at that level, the win column still reads zero, which means even in the most accessible company available, a win has not come. Regular jockey Thomas Dowson has ridden Muroor eight times without a victory between them. That is not a criticism of either horse or rider — some horses simply find a way to place without ever winning, and Muroor appears to be one of them.
What is genuinely interesting here is not the absence of wins, but the sheer persistence. Twenty-five races at 13 years old, still active, still placing occasionally — Muroor is a veteran in the truest sense. Most horses at this age have done their racing. This one is still showing up.
