What they do know is that he stays well, handles normal ground better than most — winning 2 of his 4 races on it, a remarkable 50% — and has responded to a wind operation that was intended to sharpen him up heading into this season. Before that, he'd won at Carlisle, which at least proved the talent was in there somewhere. His jockey Jonjo O'Neill Jr, who has ridden him in 10 of his 15 races and won on him 3 times (30%), suggested after one run that once he got a handicap mark, that would point the way forward. It did — and it led to a win at Market Rasen just six weeks ago, his most recent success.

The one stubborn gap in his record is at the top level he's occasionally been asked to compete at. In 7 races at Class 3 — one step below the elite — he hasn't won once. That's not necessarily a ceiling; it may simply mean he's been better placed at a slightly lower level, where his consistency and stamina become genuine assets rather than just nice qualities. He raced just yesterday, so he's very much in the thick of things right now, and the team have made clear they see more improvement ahead. For a horse they once couldn't quite work out, Mt Fugi Park is starting to make a lot of sense.
