Mr Freedom

Trained by Sheena West from her yard near Lewes in West Sussex, Mr Freedom has a very specific profile. Stretch him over one mile three furlongs to one mile four furlongs on fast, dry ground, and he becomes a different proposition—he has won 4 of 6 races over that trip, a remarkable 67% win rate. Put him on soft or wet ground, and he is far less effective. He also has a marked affinity for Windsor, where he has won twice from four visits. His regular pilot Marc Goldstein, who has ridden him in 19 races, has steered him to 4 victories together.

The less encouraging part is more recent. Mr Freedom's last win came at Sandown Park on 26 July 2024—more than two years ago. His last six runs have brought him only a pair of fourth-place finishes and a second, with a fifth and eighth in the mix. He raced just yesterday and finished second, which suggests he remains competitive and in work, but the winning touch has deserted him. At seven years old and having competed 42 times, he may be entering the veteran phase where the races dry up. Still, on a quick track at the right distance with the right conditions, there is enough in his form to suggest he could find the winner's circle again—though it will take the planets to align just right.
