The key to unlocking Mr Freedom is knowing what he likes. On fast, dry ground, he has won 2 of his 4 races — that's 50%, and it is a number that should make any racegoer sit up. Add in the fact that he has won 4 of just 5 races at a mile and three to four furlongs, and you start to see a horse with a very clear comfort zone. Get the conditions right and the distance right, and you are looking at one of the most reliable performers around at this level. Windsor is another place he clearly enjoys — 2 wins from 4 visits, which is the kind of record that makes a racecourse feel like a second home.

Jockey Marc Goldstein has been the man in the saddle for much of Mr Freedom's career, partnering him in 19 of his 38 races. Their record together reads 4 wins from those 19 outings — roughly 1 in every 5 — and there is clearly an understanding between horse and rider that the West yard has leaned on heavily.

The one honest note to strike is that Mr Freedom has not won since Sandown Park in July 2024 — two years ago now — and his last six runs have not produced a victory, with his most recent effort just a day ago. A horse that wins 1 in 4 over a career but goes six races without winning is not necessarily declining; horses have dry spells, and his finishing positions suggest he is still placing and competing. But at seven years old, with the conditions and distance he loves still available to him, the question is whether the right combination of factors comes together again before the window closes.
