Mr Cool

That level is mostly Class 4, the solid middle tier of British racing, where Mr Cool has won just 1 of 13 races. It is a competitive grade and he has not always broken through, but he showed he could handle it when he took a race at Nottingham in April 2025 for his first career win, then followed up at Ripon in June. Two wins at two different tracks suggests a horse that travels and performs rather than one who needs everything to go perfectly in his own backyard.

The ground seems to matter. On normal conditions he has won 2 from 9 races — that is a 22% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 4 or 5 races — which is meaningfully better than his overall record. Put him on wet or dry extremes and he becomes a different proposition. That is worth knowing.

He is trained by Charlie Johnston at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out 128 winners this season alone — a serious, high-volume operation that knows what it is doing. Joe Fanning is his most regular jockey, partnering him in 6 of his 26 races and winning once together, a win rate of around 1 in 6, which is slightly ahead of the horse's overall average. It is a familiar partnership, and familiarity counts.

Recent form — finishing 4th, then unplaced, then 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th in his last six — shows a horse trending in the wrong direction since that Ripon win. He has not won in six races since, and his last run was just yesterday, so he is clearly being kept busy. Whether that busy schedule is helping or hindering is the question anyone watching Mr Cool closely would want answered.
