Mountain Port

What makes the timing curious is how long the drought has lasted. That win at Tramore was over two years ago. Since then, Mountain Port has raced six more times without breaking through again, most recently just a day ago. The pattern of recent form—finishing fourth, seventh, and showing two blanks among the last six outings—suggests a horse that still has speed enough to threaten but not quite the consistency or class to win at the tracks it's been running at. Trainer Daisy Hitchins, based at Sherborne in Dorset, has had a productive season with fourteen winners from the yard, but Mountain Port has not been among them this year.

At seven years old, Mountain Port is still active and still racing, which says something about the horse's character and willingness. It shows up, competes, and occasionally gets close. Yet the reality is stark: two years without a win is a long time for any racehorse, especially one with such a modest record to begin with. For the yard, the challenge now is whether there is a particular track or distance where the horse might rediscover that form from Tramore, or whether that single victory will remain the highlight of a journeyman career.
