Easterby's yard at Great Habton has been in terrific form, sending out 126 winners this season alone, so Mount King is part of a well-oiled operation. The partnership with jockey David Allan is worth noting too: together they have won 3 from 21 races, which works out at roughly 1 in every 7 rides — a solid return that comfortably outstrips the horse's overall career win rate of around 1 in every 11. When those two come together at the right venue, things can happen.

Mount King also has a clear preference for fast, dry ground, winning 2 of 14 races in those conditions — a 14% win rate against just 4% on a typical surface. That is the kind of clue that tells you the horse has a specific set of needs. Get the right ground, the right track, and the right jockey, and this is a different animal entirely. Its last win was at Pontefract in June 2025, so it has gone 11 months without getting back to the winner's enclosure, and the recent form — finishing 6th, 7th, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 8th across its last six runs — suggests it is finding things tough at the moment.

Still only six years old and raced just yesterday, Mount King is clearly a robust, active sort. The honest truth is that the overall record — 4 wins from 44 races — tells you this is a horse that competes mostly at Class 5 level, the lower end of the British racing ladder, and has found winning genuinely hard. But the Pontefract record changes the picture. Some horses just click with a track, and when Mount King heads back there on a dry summer day with David Allan aboard, it is very much a horse worth watching.
