That win came nearly two years ago now, and the six races since have produced nothing better than a third place. Winning roughly 1 in every 14 races (7%, or 1 from 15) is a modest return for a horse at this stage of its career, and the recent form figures — showing a seventh, a third, and a sixth among the finishes we have full details for — paint a picture of a horse that occasionally gets involved without ever threatening to dominate. At eight, most horses are either at or just past their peak, so a dramatic turnaround would be surprising, though not impossible.

Trained by E McNamara out of Rathkeale in County Limerick, Mount Ferns is at least in capable hands. The yard has sent out 22 winners this season, which shows there is plenty of know-how behind the operation — the question is simply whether Mount Ferns can add to that tally. At the level it typically competes at, it has run three times without winning, so even in the more accessible races, the breakthrough has not come easily.

What is worth noting is that Mount Ferns raced just yesterday, so it is clearly fit and active. Trainers do not keep running horses for the fun of it — there is always the belief that the right race on the right day could unlock something. For Mount Ferns, that day came once at Listowel, and perhaps the hope is that a return to somewhere similar could spark a repeat. For now, though, this is a horse whose profile is defined more by persistence than by results.
