Mother Ship

The recent form makes for interesting reading, though. That dash in the sequence suggests a run where no finishing position was recorded, but either side of it there are signs of life — a second place tucked in there, and a handful of mid-pack finishes in the 5th to 8th range. It's not the form of a horse in freefall; it's the form of a horse that races consistently without finding a way to win. There's a difference, and it matters. Mother Ship isn't embarrassing itself — it's just not finding the front.

The partnership with Mr Paddy Hanlon is the defining relationship of this horse's career. Thirteen races together and not a single win between them — that's a long run of near misses and what-might-have-beens. For context, even a modest horse would be expected to win at least one race in thirteen attempts if conditions fell right. The fact it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't, but it does mean something needs to change.

Trained by John Joseph Hanlon out of Bagenalstown in County Carlow, Mother Ship is part of a yard that has sent out 11 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to win races. That makes the lack of a breakthrough for this particular horse all the more curious. With a race just one day ago, Mother Ship is very much in active training and still being campaigned — the team hasn't given up on finding the right opportunity.

At six years old, the window isn't closing yet, but it's not wide open either. Every race from here is one more chance to turn a blank record into something more, and given how consistently Mother Ship has been running, the form is there for a change of luck. Racing is full of horses that took their time — but twenty races is a long time to be waiting.
