The overall numbers tell a slightly more complicated story. Across 27 races, Morcar has won 4 times and finished in the places a further 12 times — that is a win rate of around 15%, or roughly 1 in every 6 or 7 races. That is a respectable return at the level it competes at, which is mostly Class 4, one of the more competitive mid-tier categories in British racing. At that level specifically, it has won just 2 from 18 races, which shows how hard it is to land those races consistently, even for a horse that clearly has ability. The dry ground is where it really comes alive — 4 wins from 14 races on fast conditions works out at 29%, almost 1 in 3, which is a striking contrast to its record on softer surfaces.

That is a solid relationship, and those wins suggest the pair have figured something out together. The recent form — finishing sixth, fifth, tenth, eighth, and third twice across the last six races — does not scream imminent winner, and Morcar has not won for 13 months. But a horse that finds its best at one specific track, on one specific type of ground, does not need to be in sparkling form everywhere. It just needs the right day. Lingfield, dry, is that day.
