That win came on genuinely wet, muddy ground, and jockey Joe Leavy described it vividly afterwards: Morandi Second loved every moment of it, settling beautifully when allowed to lead, then simply taking off when asked to go. "He changed his legs and took off for me," Leavy said — the kind of thing a jockey says when a horse has found something real. On fast, dry ground, you suspect the story might have been very different.

Since that October day, though, the winner's enclosure has stayed out of reach — six races without a win across the 20 months that followed. His recent form reads 12-5-2-3-2, and those placed efforts tell you he's competitive and still trying, even if the big moment hasn't come again. He races mostly at Class 5, the entry-level tier of British racing, and has won 1 from 13 at that level — around 1 in every 13 attempts. His best performances come over longer distances, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, where he's won 1 from 9 races (about 1 in 9).

Trainer Patrick Neville, who operates out of Coverham in North Yorkshire and has sent out 28 winners already this season, clearly believes there's more to come. He's spoken about finding the key to the horse after some physical issues, describing him as "a different horse now" — and with a switch back to a shorter trip in mind, the trainer thinks Morandi Second might be sitting on a decent opportunity over hurdles. The yard is in form, and a horse who won on very wet ground with that kind of authority — dictating the race, jumping away on the bend — could easily do it again if conditions fall right.

At seven, he's no longer young, but he's evidently still fresh and competitive, having raced just yesterday. For a horse with only one win to his name, he's quietly intriguing — the type who might just spring a surprise on the right day.
