In its last six races, Monty's Way has finished out of the placings four times, with a couple of seventh and eighth-place finishes mixed in—the kind of performances that say a horse is there for the experience rather than the prize. Most troublingly, it raced just a day ago and is still actively campaigned, which means the the yard are either hopeful of a turn in form or have simply run out of other options. The jockey who rides most often, P J O'Hanlon, has never managed to steer Monty's Way to victory in five attempts together, though that may say more about the horse's capabilities than anything else. For a horse that has earned only a modest sum across its entire career, continuing to race at this level feels less like optimism and more like routine.
