The recent form makes for interesting reading. That sequence of 2-4-6-3-3 shows a horse that was running respectably before the wheels came off slightly — the sixth-place finish stands out as the low point — and then bounced back to place again either side of it. Now Monaco Rules returns from a four-month break, which adds a genuine question mark. A horse that hasn't raced in 125 days is an unknown quantity. It could come back sharper, or it could need the run to shake off the rust.

Brian Hughes, one of the most experienced jockeys in the north of England, has had five attempts to get Monaco Rules into the winner's enclosure and hasn't managed it yet. That's not necessarily a reflection on either horse or rider — sometimes a partnership just hasn't clicked, or the right opportunity hasn't come along. Trainer Micky Hammond, based at Middleham in North Yorkshire, has been in good form this season with 25 winners from his yard, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses ready to win. The puzzle is why Monaco Rules hasn't been able to join that tally.

The horse typically competes at Class 4, which is the bread-and-butter level of jump racing — solid, competitive fields without the glamour of the big occasions. At that level, five races without a win starts to raise a question about whether this is simply a horse that finds a way to be involved without quite delivering. Three places from seven races means Monaco Rules places in roughly 43% of its races — it is not disgracing itself — but a horse's career is ultimately measured in wins, and there are none here yet. The return from a break could be the reset it needs, or it could be another afternoon of almost-but-not-quite. That uncertainty is exactly what makes it worth watching.
