Mojo Ego

The backstory is genuinely interesting. Mojo Ego arrived in Britain via France, where he had picked up some solid flat form under trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, one of the most respected trainers in Europe. He came to James Moffatt's yard in Cumbria with a reputation worth watching, and his debut for the stable was pencilled in at Kempton in October 2023. The fact he went on to win at Doncaster the following month suggested the foundations were there. But the 31 months since that win have been largely fruitless — six races back and his recent form reads 6-7-8-4-2-2, which tells a story of a horse finishing close without ever quite delivering.

James Moffatt, based at Cartmel in the Lake District, has sent out 11 winners this season, so the yard is clearly in decent form. It makes Mojo Ego's struggles all the more frustrating for the team. His regular partner Charlotte Jones has ridden him 10 times without a win — a 0% win rate from a significant number of attempts together. At the level he typically races at, he has won just 1 of his 9 races, roughly 1 in 9, which is below what you would hope to see at that tier. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much still in training and the search for a second win goes on.

Some horses simply find their one moment and then drift. Others take time to rediscover it. Mojo Ego, with his continental background and that one bright afternoon at Doncaster, feels like a horse with more in the locker — but he has been making the team wait a long time to find out.
