Mistral Milly

Recent form tells the real story. In its last six races, Mistral Milly has finished sixth, fifth, then went unplaced, before a sixth, a fourth, and a ninth. That fourth-place finish two runs ago offers a faint glimmer, but the pattern is clear: the horse is outpaced more often than not. Over the past half year, it has shown neither a winning run nor any sustained improvement. At Class 4 level — mid-tier racing in Britain — the horse has won zero of six races, suggesting this is genuinely tough company.

Tom Bellamy, the jockey who rides Mistral Milly most regularly, has partnered with the horse six times without a win. Trainer D. J. Jeffreys, based at Hinton on the Green in Worcestershire, has sent out four winners this season, so the yard is capable, but Mistral Milly has yet to be that horse. At seven years old, the horse's best opportunities may already have passed. Sometimes, racing simply doesn't work out — and Mistral Milly appears to be one of those honest, hardworking competitors that tries without ever quite having what it takes to cross the line first.
