The numbers tell an interesting story. Across a career of 16 races, Mistral Blue wins roughly 1 in every 5 (19%), which is a solid return at this level. But zoom in on the last six races and the picture sharpens considerably: two wins from six, including a victory at Uttoxeter just this week. That recent form — 1st, 3rd, 5th, a missed run, 2nd, 1st — reads like a horse finding top gear at exactly the right moment. The eight-year-old is not slowing down. If anything, the opposite.

One of the more curious details in Mistral Blue's record is the Class 4 puzzle. Class 4 sits in the middle tier of British racing — not the very top, but competitive enough — and Mistral Blue has run there seven times without a single win. All three career victories have come elsewhere. It is the sort of quirk that makes you wonder whether the horse simply performs better when the race is set up differently, or whether there is something about those specific Class 4 contests that has never quite clicked. Either way, the yard — sorry, the team — clearly know where this horse performs best, and this week's win at Uttoxeter suggests they have found the right formula.

That team is trained by Fergal O'Brien out of Withington in Gloucestershire, a yard that has sent out 90 winners already this season. That is a high-volume, well-run operation, and horses in that environment tend to be placed thoughtfully. Connor Brace is the regular partner in the saddle, though the pair have only struck once from eight races together — about 1 in every 8 — so it is a work in progress between horse and rider.

The first win came back in December 2023 at Doncaster, which means Mistral Blue has been competitive across more than two and a half years at this level. For a horse that races at this grade and has now won twice in its last six outings, the story heading into the next race is simple: do not write this one off.
