Mister Sox

The six-year-old is trained by Tim Easterby at Great Habton in North Yorkshire, and he is in good hands. Easterby's yard has sent out 138 winners already this season — a remarkable output that speaks to a well-drilled, high-volume operation that knows how to place horses in races they can win. Mister Sox fits that model well: a consistent performer who earns his keep without necessarily setting the world alight. His typical level is Class 4, which sits in the mid-range of British racing, and he has won 2 of his 11 races at that level.

His strongest conditions are worth noting. On normal ground he has won 4 of 10 races — 40%, which is an exceptional conversion rate and suggests wet or very fast ground simply doesn't suit him. He also does his best work over shorter distances, between 5 furlongs and six and a half, winning 5 of 18 races at those trips. That is more than 1 in every 4 races — put him in the right conditions over the right distance and he becomes a genuinely competitive horse.

The regular partnership with jockey David Allan is a curious one. They have raced together 14 times and won only once, a win rate of just 7% — well below what Mister Sox achieves with other riders. Whether that changes going forward remains to be seen. What is clear is that Mister Sox is still active, raced just yesterday, and has not won since Ripon last August. Six races without a win is a run that will test any team's patience, but with Catterick on the horizon and the right ground underfoot, he is the kind of horse you would not write off entirely.
