The career arc is a good one. The first win came at Uttoxeter in October 2021, and from there the horse climbed steadily through the grades. January 2022 brought a Class 1 victory at Haydock, then back-to-back Class 2 wins at Musselburgh and Kelso over the New Year period of 2023. The most recent success is the standout: a Class 1 win at Aintree in October 2024 — Aintree being one of the most famous racecourses in the world. Winning there, at the age of ten, is a proper achievement.

That Aintree win was 18 months ago now, and the last 6 races have produced nothing better than a third place. At 11 years old, Minella Drama is in the later stages of a career, and these things happen. But the horse is still racing — it ran just one day ago — which suggests trainer Donald McCain, whose yard in Cheshire has sent out 51 winners this season alone, still believes there is something worth chasing.

The partnership with jockey Brian Hughes is worth noting. Of the 22 times they have raced together, 5 have ended in victory — that is a win rate of 23%, or nearly 1 in every 4 races. For a horse that spends most of its time at the very top level of the sport, that is a meaningful number. Add in the fact that Minella Drama goes particularly well on normal ground — winning 2 of just 4 races in those conditions, a remarkable 50% — and the picture of a horse with specific, well-understood preferences starts to emerge. When the conditions are right and Hughes is aboard, this is still a horse that can make things happen.
