What stands out is that Million Gold performs noticeably better over the shorter distances, between five and six and a half furlongs. Over that range, it has won one from four races — a 25% win rate that is significantly stronger than its overall record. This tells us the horse may be best suited to sharp, quick races rather than longer slogs, and trainer Michael Appleby, who runs a productive yard at Oakham in Rutland that has already saddled 71 winners this season, will no doubt be mindful of that preference. At present, Million Gold remains an active runner, with a race just yesterday, so the yard are persisting with the horse despite the modest record. It is still early in a 3-year-old's career, and a horse that can win at the track and show occasional flashes of form is worth monitoring to see whether it develops into something more consistent as it matures.
