Mighty Magnus

His last six runs read 2-8-2-4-2-1, and that single blip of an eighth-place finish aside, this is a horse that has been consistently knocking on the door. Three seconds in the mix of recent form suggests he has genuine ability — he just hasn't always found the one to beat him coming up short. That win finally arrived at Ayr on 28 July 2025, and when it came, it meant something. Ayr is a proper track with a proper atmosphere, and getting off the mark there is no small thing for a young horse still finding his feet.

What's slightly curious is that Mighty Magnus has run four times at Class 4 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing — without winning any of them. His sole victory came in a different context, which suggests he might be the sort of horse who performs better when conditions or competition align in just the right way. His regular partner Connor Beasley has ridden him six times, winning once together — a rate of 17%, or roughly 1 in every 6 rides — which is actually a shade better than the horse's overall record, so the partnership clearly has something going for it.

Behind the scenes, trainer Michael Dods has had a productive season from his yard at Piercebridge in County Durham, sending out 43 winners so far this term. That's a yard in form, which matters — horses trained by confident, winning yards tend to turn up well-prepared. Mighty Magnus raced just one day ago and remains very much in active competition, so whatever comes next for him is imminent. At three years old, he has time on his side, and horses at this age can improve sharply and suddenly. The question is whether that Ayr win was a glimpse of more to come, or simply the ceiling being reached. The form suggests there might be more in him yet.
