Mighty Magnus

Trained by Michael Dods at Piercebridge in County Durham, Magnus is part of a yard having a serious season — 43 winners so far, which is the kind of output that marks out a stable running at full tilt. His most regular partner in the saddle is Connor Beasley, who has ridden him in 9 of his 14 races and won once together. That works out at roughly 1 win in every 9 rides, which isn't a sparkling ratio, but the placings — those near-misses and thirds — suggest the pair aren't far off more often than the win column lets on.

The really interesting detail in Magnus's record is where he wins. His first career win came at Ayr in July 2025, and his most recent came at Musselburgh four weeks ago — both tracks in Scotland, both in the north where Dods's horses tend to travel. Whether that's coincidence or something more is hard to say from two wins alone, but it's worth watching. Equally intriguing — and slightly puzzling — is that in the four races he's run at Class 4 level, the step up in class that might seem like his natural home, he's yet to win. Zero from four. His wins have come elsewhere, which gives him a slightly unconventional profile.

Recent form is genuinely encouraging. Reading his last six runs from most recent backwards: third, fifth, first, third, a rough one finishing thirteenth, then second. Ignore that thirteenth — every horse has a bad day — and what you see is a horse that has been consistently in and around the frame. He raced just yesterday, so he's clearly being kept busy by the team, which usually means they think there's more to come.

At three years old, with his career still early and a yard in fine form behind him, Mighty Magnus looks like exactly the kind of horse who could add to his tally before the season is out.
