The recent form tells a pretty honest story. Looking back through the last six races, the numbers read 5-8-–-20-14-11, with that fifth-place finish the closest thing to a bright spot. The string of double-digit finishes in between point to a horse that is finding things difficult at this level, and a win rate of zero from seven races is hard to dress up. That said, Midnight Musical did race just one day ago, so the yard are clearly keeping it busy and believing something can change.
The horse is trained by Anthony McCann out of Castleblaney in County Monaghan, a yard that has sent out 7 winners already this season — roughly one winner per week if spread across a typical campaign. That is a decent operation, and it suggests McCann knows how to place a horse to win. The puzzle for Midnight Musical is that, so far, the right opportunity has not presented itself. Whether that is a matter of finding easier company, better ground, or simply waiting for the horse to mature into its ability, only the trainer will know. But at five years old, time is not infinite.
For now, Midnight Musical remains a horse with potential buried somewhere in those seven races that has yet to find its way to the surface.
