The trainer behind that debut is K R Burke, based at Coverham in North Yorkshire, and the numbers from his yard this season speak for themselves — 145 winners already, which is the output of an operation firing on all cylinders. When a trainer of that volume and quality sends a two-year-old to Doncaster and the horse wins first time out, it is rarely an accident. Burke's team tend to know what they have before they run it.
It is early days, of course — one race is a sample size of one, and plenty of promising debut winners go on to tell a more complicated story. But right now, Met Ball has nothing but a clean sheet, trained by one of the most productive yards in the country, and raced just this week. Whatever comes next will be worth watching.
