The career arc tells a neat story. The first win came at Thurles in October 2023, and then came the big one — Galway, October 2024. Galway is one of the most famous racecourses in Ireland, and winning there means something. It suggests Messerschmitt can raise its game when the occasion calls for it, rather than just picking up easy wins at quiet tracks.

The awkward truth, though, is that the Galway win is now 18 months in the past, and Messerschmitt hasn't won since. The last six races read 9-4-11-8-2-3 — a mixed bag that includes a decent second and third, but also two deeply unimpressive finishes. The trend isn't particularly encouraging.

Perhaps the most puzzling detail is the partnership with Colin Keane. Keane is one of Ireland's finest jockeys, and yet across five races together, Messerschmitt has given him precisely nothing to work with — zero wins from five attempts. That's not necessarily anyone's fault, but it's the kind of statistic that makes you wonder whether a change of approach might unlock something different. Meade's yard has been in decent form this season, sending out 38 winners, so the infrastructure is clearly working — just not quite for this particular horse right now.

Messerschmitt raced just one day ago, which means it's as active as it gets. Whether there's another win in there somewhere — a third chapter to go with Thurles and Galway — is the question. On recent evidence, you'd want to see something in the form before getting too excited. But a horse that has won at Galway once before is never entirely without hope.
