Mergus Serrator

What makes Mergus Serrator's situation slightly more encouraging is the yard behind it. Cromwell's operation has been prolific this season, sending out 96 winners, which suggests the trainer knows how to get horses ready to win. The recent form chart shows some daylight — those two fourth-place finishes mean the horse was not far away from picking up a placing. Having raced just yesterday keeps Mergus Serrator active in the schedule, which at least gives it regular opportunities to learn and improve. For a young horse with no wins yet, consistency of racing and a trainer in form are two of the few things working in its favour. The next few runs will tell whether this horse is capable of that first win, or whether it will remain a perpetual bridesmaid.
