The recent form figures — 4, 17, 6, 2, 5, 4 — are worth a closer look. That second place is the standout moment, the one time Mereside Spark got genuinely competitive and came within touching distance of a win. The string of fourth and fifth-place finishes either side of it suggests a horse that is in the mix without being able to land the decisive blow. The 17 is the obvious blot, a race to forget, but it hasn't derailed things completely.
Mereside Spark competes at Class 5, the level where horses are finding their feet and races are decided by fine margins. Going winless from three races at that level means there is still everything to prove, but it also means the opportunity is still there. One good day, on the right track in the right conditions, and the picture can change quickly.
The yard behind the horse — run by David and Nicola Barron out of Maunby in North Yorkshire — has sent out 15 winners this season, which shows there is plenty of know-how in the operation. They clearly know how to get a horse to win, and that experience will matter as they look for the right race to finally get Mereside Spark off the mark. At three years old, time is still on this horse's side, and a first win would be a satisfying reward for a team that has kept plugging away.
