The most interesting thing about this horse is what it refuses to do at the highest level. This matters because it defines where the horse belongs: in easier company, where it has won both its races over the past six outings, including a win at Fontwell Park just four weeks ago. That victory came after a string of places, which suggests the horse is a reliable performer in its comfort zone but needs the right conditions to cross the line first.

Trainer Toby Bulgin, based at Lambourn in Berkshire, has a quiet yard—only three winners sent out this season—so Merely A Detail represents reliable work rather than a star turn. The horse is currently active, having raced just a day ago, and is clearly being kept busy in the autumn. With recent form that reads 3-1-1-4-3-4 (third, first, first, fourth, third, fourth across the last six races), there is some consistency here: two wins in half a dozen outings, and only one outing where it finished outside the first four. It is a horse that will win again, almost certainly in Class 3 or easier, but anyone waiting for a breakthrough into the very top tier should probably stop holding their breath.
