In plain terms, it has gone out at the lowest grade of competition and still found it difficult. That said, 17 places tells you it is rarely disgraced — it tends to finish in and around the money, just not at the front of it.

The most recent win came at Southwell on 30 August 2024, which is now 22 months ago. The last six runs have returned a fifth, two sixths, a seventh, an eighth and a third — respectable enough without being exciting. The partnership with jockey Lewis Edmunds has produced 2 wins from 19 races together, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 10 rides, which is actually above the horse's overall average. That slight uptick when the two are paired is one of the more positive details in an otherwise modest recent record.

Trainer Jessica Macey, based in Doncaster, has had 13 winners out of her yard this season, which shows the operation is functioning well — the issue is simply that Mercurius Power has not been among them. The first career win came at Sandown Park back in July 2022, a track with a bit more prestige than the horse usually encounters these days, which perhaps hints at what was once hoped for this animal when it was younger.

At eight years old, still racing, still placing, and still raced as recently as yesterday, Mercurius Power is not a horse chasing glory. It is a horse doing a job — and there is something quietly admirable about that consistency, even if the wins have become rare.
