That one win came at The Curragh in April 2024, over the short, sharp distances between five and six-and-a-half furlongs where Mercurial clearly feels most at home. It's now been 26 months since that day, and in the 14 races run over those shorter trips, the record reads one win from fourteen — so about 1 in every 14. Competitive, occasionally eye-catching, but the winner's prize keeps slipping away.

The partnership with jockey Sean D Bowen tells a similar story. The two have been paired together 18 times, more than any other combination, and are yet to win together. That doesn't mean it hasn't worked — those 18 races will have included plenty of placed finishes — but it's the kind of statistic that quietly catches your attention. Recent form shows two second-place finishes in the last six runs, so Mercurial is still running well enough to be involved at the finish, just not quite well enough to get there first.

Trainer John J Nallen's yard has sent out five winners this season, which shows the operation is capable of finding the right races and getting horses ready. At Class 4 level, one rung below the top tier, Mercurial has run three times without winning — 0 from 3. That suggests the horse may simply be most comfortable in slightly softer company. Having raced just yesterday, this is very much a horse still in the thick of things, and with a track record of placing so often, another winning day is not out of the question — though history suggests it might keep you waiting.
