The level Memories Maker competes at — Class 5, the lower end of the racing ladder — means the competition is already relatively modest, which makes the absence of a win harder to explain away. Three races at that level, zero wins. For context, a horse finding its feet or working back to form might be forgiven for a slow start, but nine races in with no wins and form that appears to be going in the wrong direction rather than improving raises genuine questions about whether a breakthrough is coming.
Anthony McCann, based in Castleblaney in County Monaghan, trains the horse, and it would be unfair to suggest the yard is struggling — seven winners on the board this season shows McCann can find the winner's enclosure with the right horse on the right day. Memories Maker simply hasn't been that horse yet. With the horse having raced as recently as yesterday, the yard are clearly still trying, and there may be a race out there that suits — but based on what we know, patience is the order of the day. A first win remains the target, and it's still very much outstanding.
