Melting Snow

That winning form arrived three weeks ago at Wolverhampton, where Melting Snow got the job done over a mile and a quarter. Since then, the horse has been back to struggling—a fifth and a fourth in the past six races—but the signs before that were more encouraging: a second place and a couple of fifth-place finishes show it is competitive, even if it is not quite firing consistently. The fact that it raced just a day ago suggests Ed Dunlop's Newmarket yard is keeping the horse active and looking for the right opportunity, rather than letting it sit idle. Dunlop's operation has already sent out 39 winners this season, so the trainer clearly knows how to get horses to the track in winning form.

The puzzle with Melting Snow is distance and temperament. It clearly prefers the middle-distance range, and once it finds the right race at the right track, it could easily add to its tally. For now, though, it remains a work in progress—a young horse with one win under its belt and the potential to string together better form if the conditions align.
