Mayflower Rock

The recent form tells a mixed story. Over its last six outings, Mayflower Rock has shown glimpses of promise—a fourth-place finish most recently, and another fourth earlier in the sequence—but consistency remains elusive. A third place sits in there too, but sandwiched between some tougher days when the horse finished sixth, seventh, and tenth. Nothing suggests a horse completely out of its depth, but nothing yet indicates a breakthrough is imminent either. The fact that it was racing just yesterday means it is actively campaigned and clearly sound, which counts for something.

With no wins from seven attempts, Mayflower Rock is at a stage where many young horses either find their level or begin to drift down the card. The yard's strong record this season is worth noting—Cunha clearly knows how to get horses to the winner's enclosure—but so far this particular three-year-old has not been the one to benefit. Time remains on its side at this age, but the sooner it breaks the duck, the better. For now, it is a horse treading water, waiting for the right race, the right conditions, or the right moment to click.
