The recent form figures of 6-5-2-8-4-10 are a mixed picture. That second place finish stands out as the clear highlight, proof that Mayflower Billy can at least get competitive when things fall right. The 8th and 10th place efforts are harder to explain away, though, and suggest the horse is still finding its feet at this level. Consistency, so far, is the missing ingredient.
Trained by Jessica Macey out of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, Mayflower Billy is part of a yard that has sent out 13 winners this season — so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the track in winning condition. The fact that Macey has kept running this horse suggests there is still belief that a first win is coming. With a race as recently as yesterday, Mayflower Billy is very much an active project rather than a finished article.
At three years old, there is time on its side. Some horses take longer than others to click, and a yard with a solid season behind it is not going to give up easily. Whether Mayflower Billy can translate that placed effort into an actual win remains the question — but for now, it remains one of racing's works in progress.
