The headlines he has made are worth dwelling on. In January 2023 at Doncaster, he landed a Class 1 race — one of the very top races in Britain — and a post-race comment from trainer Donald McCain told you everything about how he views this horse: second in a Grade One at Aintree, giving the winner seven pounds in weight and nearly getting there. "On another day?" McCain said. That question has never quite been answered. Maximilian has not won in his last six races, and his last victory now sits 39 months in the past. But three of those six runs have been placed, including two seconds and two thirds, suggesting the talent is still there. It is simply waiting.
One place it has never waited at all is Carlisle. Maximilian has raced there three times and won all three. Three from three. That is not a coincidence — that is a horse that genuinely loves a particular track, whether it is the layout, the ground, or simply the atmosphere. For context, in the Class 3 races he most commonly runs in, he wins roughly 1 in every 6 attempts. At Carlisle, he wins every single time.
His partnership with jockey Brian Hughes is another thread worth following. Together they have won 5 of their 12 races — that is 42%, or nearly 1 in every 2 — a remarkable figure that suggests the pair have developed a genuine understanding. McCain has spoken about Maximilian being a horse that "saves plenty for himself," which is trainer-speak for a horse that doesn't show its hand early and needs a jockey who knows when to ask. Hughes clearly knows when to ask.
There is a new chapter opening, too. The yard has been pointing him towards novice chasing — jumping larger fences for the first time, essentially a step up in difficulty — after a couple of seasons where ground conditions and a long absence complicated things. He is reportedly back in strong work, and with 55 winners sent out by the McCain yard this season alone, the infrastructure is there. Whether Carlisle features in those plans, you suspect it probably should.
