Masterminding

The recent form offers a flicker of something. In its last six races, Masterminding has finished third and second, which after a run of mid-pack results is at least a sign that the horse is finding its way back toward the sharp end. It raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in the thick of its season rather than one being nursed along from the sidelines.

Moffatt's yard has been in decent shape this season, sending out 11 winners, which shows the team knows how to get a horse ready to win. That makes Masterminding's blank record feel more like a puzzle than a reflection of poor training. At Class 4 level — broadly the middle tier of British racing, not the very top but competitive enough — the horse has run six times without a win, suggesting it may be finding even that level a tough ask. The question worth watching is whether those recent placed efforts signal that something is clicking, or whether they are simply the high point of a horse that consistently gets close without being able to seal the deal.

For a horse that has now raced 14 times, zero wins is a stark number. But two places from 14 races means Masterminding has shown up on occasion — it just cannot quite convert. At 7 years old, time is not unlimited, but horses do sometimes find their moment later than expected. With the yard in form and the horse clearly still being campaigned actively, it would be a brave person to write Masterminding off entirely. Whether that elusive first win ever arrives is the only story left to tell.
