The recent form makes for harder reading. Finishing positions of 9, 9, 13, 4, 5, and 3 in his last six races show a horse that has edged closer in his most recent run — third place is respectable — but hasn't converted that into a win. Regular partner Wesley Joyce has ridden him in 7 races without a winner between them, which doesn't necessarily reflect badly on either horse or jockey, but does underline how rarely the stars have aligned for this pairing.

Murray's yard at Navan has sent out 2 winners this season, so this is a small, modestly resourced operation rather than a powerhouse stable. Master Garvey isn't a horse chasing Group glory or collecting big prize money — he's a working racehorse doing his job at a realistic level, turning up reliably and occasionally rewarding patience. With that third-place finish fresh in the book and a habit of winning in March, it would be brave to write him off entirely just yet.
