Both of his career wins have come at distances between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs — and at those trips he's actually won 2 of just 4 races, which is a genuinely striking record. It suggests this is a horse who knows exactly what he wants: a decent test of stamina, not a sprint. Strip away those conditions and he's a different proposition entirely. He's also won at two quality venues — Navan in May 2024 and Leopardstown in October 2024 — which tells you he's capable of winning somewhere that matters when everything lines up.

The puzzle is that it hasn't lined up since. That Leopardstown win was 20 months ago, and in the races since, he hasn't got close. Shane B Kelly, who has partnered him six times, is still waiting for a first win together — 0 from 6 is a tough run for any combination. At Class 5, the lowest level of British racing, he's also 0 from 5, which is an oddly poor record for a horse competing at that grade.

He's trained by Neil Mulholland at his yard in Limpley Stoke in Wiltshire, and this is a stable worth paying attention to — they've sent out 60 winners already this season, which is a healthy, productive operation. The talent is clearly there at yard level. Master Dunraven just needs to rediscover whatever he showed at Leopardstown — the right trip, the right day — to remind everyone what he can do when the pieces fall into place.
