That sole career win came at Tipperary back in September 2023, now 35 months ago, which is a long time between victories by anyone's measure. Since then, Maralinga has gone six races without troubling the winner's enclosure, and a recent form line of finishes in the teens doesn't make for comfortable reading. A 4% win rate — one win from 24 races — puts this firmly in the territory of a horse that competes rather than dominates.

Where things get marginally more interesting is over longer distances. At a mile and six furlongs up to two miles, Maralinga has won 1 from 7 races, which works out at roughly 1 in every 7 — well above its overall record. That suggests the horse has a preference for a proper stamina test, and the yard have clearly taken note by keeping it in those longer contests. Gavin Ryan, who rides it most regularly, has also been aboard for that one win from their seven races together, a 14% win rate in their partnership that comfortably outstrips the horse's career average.

Timothy Doyle's yard is small but active — two winners on the board this season — and Maralinga raced just yesterday, so it is still very much in training. At this stage of its career, a second win would feel like a significant moment. It won't be troubling the big occasion races, but for a small yard and a patient team, every winner counts.
