At this early stage of a racing life, four races is barely the beginning. Trainer Dylan Cunha, who runs a sharp yard at Newmarket in Suffolk, will have plenty of time to work out where Mandolin Rain belongs and what this horse might be capable of. The fact that Cunha's stable has already sent out 45 winners this season shows he knows how to develop talent, which is reason enough to keep watching. For a young horse still winless, the margins between races and the pattern of how it's beaten matter more than the bare results. Whether Mandolin Rain clicks into gear or settles at a lower level will become clearer over the next few months and several more races.
