Trained by P Twomey out of Cashel, Co Tipperary, Mandara Mist is learning the ropes in capable hands. The yard has sent out 42 winners already this season, which is a serious number — it tells you this is not a backyard operation throwing horses at races and hoping for the best. When a trainer at that level of productivity runs a horse, there is usually a plan behind it.
A single fifth-place finish gives almost nothing away. Some horses need a race under their belt before they show their real ability — the noise, the crowd, the experience of racing in company for the first time can overwhelm even a talented animal. Whether Mandara Mist is one of those who will step forward significantly next time out, or whether that fifth place is closer to the ceiling, is a question only the next few races will answer.
