That unknown quality is part of what makes debuts so compelling. Everything about how Mala will react—to the crowd, to the pace, to being asked to gallop flat out alongside other horses for the first time—is still a mystery. She could settle into it naturally, or she could need a race or two to find her feet. The trainer, Mrs John Harrington, has a yard in Moone, County Kildare, that has already sent out 53 winners this season, so she clearly knows how to get a horse ready. Whether Mala is one of those winners, though, belongs entirely to the future.
