Magnificent Mel

Rod Millman, who trains her out of his yard in Kentisbeare, Devon, is quietly confident. His team has sent out 42 winners already this season, so he knows what a horse close to winning looks like. He points to a solid second-place finish at Nottingham in April as evidence that Magnificent Mel is capable, and he has a ready explanation for a disappointing run at Bath more recently. Sat alongside the race favourite from the start, both horses ended up fighting each other too early, burning through energy in the opening couple of furlongs and then having nothing left to give when it mattered. It is a common enough problem in racing — get the pace wrong early and even a decent horse will fade when the real pressure comes on.

What makes Magnificent Mel's story genuinely interesting is where she came from. She began her career at Richard Hannon's yard, one of the biggest and most successful training operations in Britain, where the expectation was clearly high. She did not live up to that billing there — Millman is candid about that — but rather than disappearing into obscurity, she found a new home in Devon. Now running off a rating of 50, which effectively tells you where the handicapper thinks she sits in the pecking order, Millman believes that mark gives her a realistic chance of winning races at this level. Essentially, she has been handed a fresh start with a trainer who sees something worth working with.

She has never won in five attempts at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, which makes the record look bleak on paper. But context matters. With a trainer in form, a plausible excuse for her most recent run, and a handler who speaks about her with quiet optimism rather than deflection, Magnificent Mel looks like a horse whose first win could be closer than thirteen fruitless races would suggest.
