Madajovy

The recent form tells an interesting story. Looking at the last six races, Madajovy has shown up with back-to-back runner-up finishes in there, suggesting the ability is present. The issue is converting that promise into a victory. Twice finishing second is genuinely encouraging — it means the horse is competitive and running honest races — but at some point a horse needs to turn those near misses into something more. The two blanks either side of those placings (the sevens in the sequence) show the performance can be inconsistent, which is the puzzle Louise Allan's yard at Newmarket will be trying to solve.

Allan has had a quiet season, with just one winner sent out so far, and Madajovy represents one of the stable's most consistent runners in terms of appearances. Jockey Harry Skelton has partnered the horse five times without a win between them, though that partnership has produced some of those placed efforts. Skelton is an experienced jockey and not the sort of rider a yard puts up without intention — his continued association with Madajovy suggests the team believes there is a race to be won somewhere.

Madajovy has done most of its racing at Class 4 level, which sits in the mid-range of British racing — competitive enough that you need to be decent, but not the rarefied air of the top two classes. Going zero from five at that level is a concern, and it raises the question of whether a drop in class might be the key to unlocking that elusive first win. Having raced just one day ago, Madajovy is clearly fit and active, and with those recent placed efforts in the book, the next run will be worth watching — particularly if the yard can find the right race to finally get the horse's head in front.
