Macho Sun

The recent run of form makes for difficult reading. In the last six races, Macho Sun has finished fifth, then pulled up or fallen out of contention across three consecutive outings, before a fourth and a seventh. That sequence suggests something is not quite clicking at the moment, whether in terms of fitness, confidence, or simply the horse finding its races a little too competitive. The team at Little Barugh, trained by Mike Sowersby in North Yorkshire, will be well aware the puzzle needs solving. Sowersby's yard has sent out six winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the front — Macho Sun just has not been one of them yet.

The partnership with jockey Dylan Hogan is the most telling statistic of all. Thirteen races together, zero wins. That is a significant sample — thirteen chances is more than enough to suggest this is simply a very hard horse to win on, rather than a question of the wrong jockey. Hogan keeps getting the leg up, which means the yard believe in the partnership, but results have not rewarded that faith.

The class level is worth understanding too. Macho Sun competes almost exclusively at Class 5, which is the everyday, bread-and-butter level of British racing — not the glamour end of the sport. And yet even there, zero wins from thirteen races at that level. That is not a horse being placed too ambitiously; it is a horse that has been given every opportunity to win in accessible company and has not taken one yet. At six years old and active just fourteen days ago, there is still time. But the clock is ticking, and the record makes it hard to argue that a first win is just around the corner.
