Macedonian

Since that Kempton win, Macedonian has gone 13 months without returning to the winner's enclosure, and recent form makes for tough reading: finishing 9th, 11th, 7th, 7th, 4th, and 10th across the last six races. That run of results suggests a horse that is competitive enough to fill a field but has not yet found a way to string a performance together when it counts. The single fourth-place finish in that sequence offers a small flicker of encouragement, though it remains just that — a flicker.

The majority of Macedonian's racing has come at Class 5 level, which is towards the lower end of the British racing ladder, and even there the record is modest: 1 win from 11 races at that level, or about 1 in every 11. That tells you this is a horse finding its ceiling rather than outgrowing it. Macedonian raced just yesterday, so the team are clearly keeping busy with this one and looking for the right opportunity to spark something.

The yard behind Macedonian is trained by Michael Dods, operating out of Piercebridge in County Durham. Dods has had a productive season, sending out 43 winners, which suggests a yard in solid form — there is clearly ability to develop horses when the pieces fall into place. Whether Macedonian can become one of those winners again is the question worth watching.
