Most of Macedonian's racing has come in Class 5 company, which sits near the bottom of Britain's racing ladder — these are races designed for horses finding their level rather than chasing the big prizes. Even there, winning has been tough: 1 from 11 in that grade, or about 1 in every 11 tries, which gives you a sense of just how hard-fought that Kempton victory was. It was not an easy day's work; it was a genuine achievement at a competitive level.

The horse is trained by Michael Dods, whose yard is based in Piercebridge, County Durham. Dods is having a productive season — 43 winners sent out so far — which suggests the operation is in good health, even if Macedonian itself has not been able to add to that tally recently. The horse raced just yesterday, so it is clearly in active work and being kept busy.
