The one area where the numbers look more encouraging is over a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs. At that distance, Lyric has won 1 from 4 races — that's one in every four attempts, or 25%, which is a much better picture than the overall record of roughly one win in every nine. It's a small sample, but it does suggest that when the trip is right, Lyric is a more competitive animal than the headline figures imply.
The yard behind the horse is worth noting. Jonjo and A J O'Neill, based just outside Cheltenham, have sent out 52 winners already this season — a busy, well-organised operation that clearly knows how to get horses to run their best. A horse trained there is in capable hands, and with Lyric having raced as recently as yesterday, this is clearly an active campaign rather than a horse being quietly wound down.
The honest truth, though, is that a first win in over two years is a long wait. Whether Lyric can rediscover that Windsor form — or whether that April 2024 victory was a one-off peak — is the question worth watching.
