At three years old, Luscious Lil is still very much a work in progress. Horses this age are often finding their feet — learning how to race, how to settle, how to respond when the pressure goes on. A 10th place on debut is almost routine for a horse who has never experienced a racecourse before, and a 6th last time out, just one day ago, suggests she is starting to piece things together. It would be premature to write her off on three runs.
What does work in her favour is who has her in training. Gemma Tutty, based at Osmotherley in North Yorkshire, has sent out 19 winners already this season — a healthy total that tells you this is a yard that knows how to get horses ready to perform. Tutty is a trainer on the rise, and horses from her yard tend to arrive at the track fit and well-prepared. If Luscious Lil is going to turn the corner, she is in capable hands to do it.
