What makes that win instructive is what his trainer observed afterwards: Look Back Smiling is not straightforward, a horse with his own opinions about how a race should unfold, forcing his jockey to work for every inch. Yet when the racing rough-and-tumble played out in his favour at Doncaster, with his head in front where it mattered, the quality was undeniable. Mulholland has since returned him to Doncaster, convinced that is where his best chances lie.

The puzzle is weather-dependent. The trainer describes him as fit and eager, waiting only for rain to come. That suggests the engine is still there. At Pontefract he claimed his first win back in August 2022, proving he can win away from Doncaster, but his record elsewhere is modest. With jockey Laura Coughlan in the saddle just once in seven rides together, consistency in the saddle has not yet emerged as a factor either. For now, Look Back Smiling remains a horse defined by his Doncaster form and by waiting for conditions to align.
