The trainer Neil Mulholland — whose yard at Limpley Stoke has sent out 60 winners already this season, which tells you this is a stable in form — is refreshingly candid about what this horse needs. The ground has to be soft or muddy. When the Spring Mile came around again recently, Look Back Smiling ran on fast, dry ground and finished well down the field. Mulholland isn't hiding from that; he has said the horse is fit, happy, and ready, but he is simply waiting for rain. For a horse described as well placed at its current rating, that patience makes sense.
There is also a note of character here. After the Doncaster win, Mulholland's predecessor at the yard, trainer Gemma Tutty, remarked that the horse doesn't exactly make life easy for its jockey — it took some persuading in the final stretch before putting its head in front. That kind of quirky, reluctant brilliance is something racing fans tend to remember. Laura Coughlan, who rides it most often, has won once from seven races together — roughly 1 in every 7 — which reflects both the horse's talent and its tendency to keep you guessing.
Overall, Look Back Smiling has earned around enough in prize money to make it a professional racehorse, not a star, but a reliable and occasionally brilliant one when things go its way. Six races without a win since that Doncaster success in March 2024 will have tested the yard's patience, and recent finishes of tenth and ninth suggest it has had some difficult days. But with the right conditions — a wet week, a trip back to Doncaster — this is a horse that has already shown it can beat good animals on a track it clearly loves. The team are watching the weather. When the rain comes, it will be worth watching too.
