The last six races tell the story of a horse searching for form. Sixth, third, sixth, seventh, third, fourth—no wins, but some solid placings that suggest fitness and effort. Its trainer Neil Mulholland, based in Wiltshire and having sent out 60 winners this season alone, says the horse is "fit and happy and raring to go," but admits it's a waiting game. Look Back Smiling shows its best when ground conditions are softer—it struggled badly in the Spring Mile replay this year on fast, dry ground that was, as Mulholland put it, "far too quick for him." Off a handicap mark of 80 and with Doncaster clearly its spiritual home, the horse has plenty of opportunities if the weather obliges. Mulholland even suggested returning to that track, where the horse has shown it can genuinely compete at the top level. At Class 4 level—its usual home—it has won two of 17 races. It won't revolutionise any records, but on the right day, in the right place, Look Back Smiling knows how to deliver.
