That is a serious level of competition, and it suggests there is real ability in there when everything clicks. Doncaster also appears to suit Look Back Smiling more than anywhere else: 2 wins from 9 races at that track puts it well above its overall average, and there are horses that simply love a particular course the way some footballers always seem to score against one particular team. The problem is that Doncaster win was 25 months ago, and the horse hasn't won since.
That winless run now stretches to six races, and recent finishing positions of 4th, 5th, 7th, 11th, 6th and 9th paint a picture of a horse that is involved without ever quite getting there. It returns now after a four-month break — roughly 127 days off the track — which can sometimes be the reset a horse needs, or can simply mean it arrives rusty. Worth watching either way.
