Winning on your local track, in front of a familiar crowd, carries a certain charm. Allen's yard has sent out four winners this season, so this is a small but functioning operation rather than a powerhouse stable, and every winner they get matters.

The most intriguing detail in Lonesome Boatman's record is the partnership with Mr D Allen — almost certainly a family connection to the trainer, riding as an amateur. Together they have run six times and have yet to win. Six races, no wins, but Lonesome Boatman has still managed to place during his career, so this is not a combination that has been entirely without merit. It is, however, a partnership still waiting for its moment.

His recent form tells the story of a horse coming back to life. Reading from oldest to newest across his last six runs, he has gone fourth, then a win, then third, then sixth, then two runs where he did not feature — though he raced just yesterday, so whatever happened in that most recent outing is still fresh. The Cork win eight months ago looks like a high point he has been unable to quite reach again since, but the third place that followed it showed he was at least building something.
