The recent form tells a similar story. Looking at the last six runs, Lone Soldier has posted a third, a fifth, a second, and another third, with two runs where it failed to finish in the frame at all. It simply lives in that frustrating territory between also-ran and winner.

The level it competes at is worth noting. Fourteen of its nineteen races have come at Class 5, which is the bread-and-butter, entry-level tier of British racing. These are not difficult fields to beat, and the fact that Lone Soldier has gone winless across all fourteen of those races is the most honest summary of where it stands. It is a horse that turns up, runs its race, and finishes somewhere in the pack — admirable in its consistency, if not in its results.
