Little Pi

Sam Allwood trains Little Pi from a base in Whitchurch, Shropshire, and has sent out 6 winners this season. It is a modest but productive operation, and Little Pi fits the profile of the type of horse that keeps such a yard ticking over. The partnership with jockey Stan Sheppard has been particularly fruitful: the two have won 2 of their 8 races together, a win rate of 25%, which is well above the horse's overall average. When Sheppard is in the saddle, something clearly clicks.

The conditions matter too. Little Pi has won 2 of 8 races on slightly soft, wet ground — a 25% win rate that is notably stronger than its overall record suggests. Combine that with a preference for distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, where it has won 2 of 7 races (nearly 1 in 3), and you start to see a horse with a specific sweet spot. Get the distance right, get a bit of moisture in the ground, and Little Pi becomes a genuinely competitive animal.

The first career win came at Ludlow in November 2023, and the most recent — at Huntingdon just eight weeks ago in February 2026 — shows the horse is still very much in form. That Huntingdon win is the one to focus on: it confirms Little Pi is not fading with age and arrived at the track ready to perform. With a race recorded just yesterday, this is a horse still firmly in the thick of things. At Class 5 level, on a wet day, over the right trip, Little Pi is exactly the kind of horse that catches people out.
